This article will focus on the image of the city in the works of Mexican poet Efraín Huerta (1914-1982), particularly in two poems from the collection Los hombres del alba, published in 1944. These two poems, ¿A Declaration of Love¿ and ¿A Declaration of Hatred¿, depicted the Mexican capital city under a new light and the remarkable way in which the poet dealt with urban space enabled him to acquire national fame, but also to be labelled as ¿the poet of the city¿ by the critics. Mexico City, as represented in these poems, constitutes a poetic motif: the poet endeavours to grasp the whole extent of a city in full expansion through its inhabitants.
